Role: Lead Designer, Prototyper, Lead Architect. I built out an initial proof of concept to fully demonstrate app functionality and hardware interaction. We then refined the application to broaden the

Objective: Drive a new vision of consistent installation in all products serviced by our professionals. Provide a set of tools our pros can use in the field. Provide a means to update the app using over-the-air updates.

Context: Resideo was using a web app packaged as a native app for local installers, that didn’t allow any offline functionality. The experience received low marks and routinely led to confusion.

Outcome: We delivered a new app vision and the current build is underway with our engineering team. It is poised to become one of the company’s primary apps considering the value of Resideo’s pro channel.

A consistent experience for pros

Collaborate

Early-on, I collaborated with product ownership and engineering to understand the app architecture, and how we could build an experience that could change day-to-day based on user feedback. This helped us deliver dynamic content in templated screens.

Ideate

Standardizing the experience wasn’t exclusively an app concern. To get a wholistic experience, we really wanted to drive for consistency on-device as well. Using node.js, a Raspberry Pi, noble.js and rpi-ws281x-native, I built a real-world demo getting a device online using BLE.

Iterate

This project went through various stages, starting with a simple install and configuration and quickly evolving to a broader toolset to better reflect the needs of our technicians. As we broadened the portfolio to support new devices, the device dashboard also evolved.

Flows stem from epics and business requirements establishing a high-level understanding across the business. From that point I was able to begin wires and fine-tune a UI that is both flexible and consistent.

Wires facilitated deeper level technical requirements and story creation, allowing a final pass with refined UI elements and interactions to enable multitasking.

Making something new feel familiar

The pro installer app houses a broad amount of functionality and features for our pro. In a final pass, we pulled in the latest techniques with Adobe XD to ensure micro-interactions were accounted for and screens blended seamlessly from one to the next. This helped flatten and streamline the experience.
