Honeywell Safety Suite
• Interaction Design Lead: Drew Covi • Research Lead: Conor Mackin
Role: Lead Designer, Lead Front End Developer, Architect. I began running design & dev operations independently and scaled up to lead multiple designers and hiring an agency to take over front-end development.
Objective: Safety Suite is a workforce management tool that blends equipment tracking and inspections with workers training to ensure safety compliance.
Context: The project suffered from a dramatically outdated UI that was not responsive, and lacked any APIs to support third-parties or multiple platforms. Waterfall also plagued the project hindering progress.
Outcome: We executed on a new design vision, building out a single page application as a proof of concept, and establishing best practices for day to day execution.
Process
Collaborate
To best understand who our solution would impact, we needed to understand not just our primary user, but their influencers, their managers, and even their families. From that point I was able to establish personas and draft stories that focused on goals and avoided solutions.
Ideate
To help establish where each story began and where each story ended, I focused on high-level flow diagrams leveraging simple UML flows. These flows assisted in not only telling the story of our user but the dependencies behind the scenes.
Create
Once we had established the high-level flow, I refined some concepts into low-fidelity wires that we could then take to safety professionals. In this instance, I built out a prototype in Axure, but throughout the project, we also used InVision and I even built out a few experiences in HTML.
Validate
Every sprint we allotted time to get direct input from our Safety Managers and individual workers. We learned a great deal on what metrics were important, what layouts would be the most useful, and what we could remove to help simplify the experience.
Iterate
Thanks to a regular cadence of design and test, I was able to quickly turn around higher-fidelity mockups and document our final result for our API teams overseas. The final pass added more refined typography, color use, and iconography.
Public release
Honeywell Safety Suite was launched to the public in 2016 with a complete set of tools and functionality for the safety professional.
